Are you looking for a solid side dish? Are you tired of rice? Here are 3 reasons why you should start using quinoa instead.

In the 16th century, Quinoa, which is indigenous to South America, was nearly wiped out by the Spanish Conquistadors. In modern times it has become a food staple and has found itself with the label of super grain.

At one point Quinoa had been considered strange or exotic, but as popularity in the Gluten free diet grew, quinoa is easily found in just about every supermarket. Lucky us, since quinoa is a nutritional powerhouse. It only helps that it takes about half the time to cook as brown rice.

Reason 1: Quinoa Is Rich In Antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that help the body by finding cell damaging free radicals and soaking them up. Having a higher intake of antioxidants can improve the body’s ability to fight various diseases. The Antioxidants like those found in Quinoa and fruits and vegetables also assist in recovery after a strenuous workout by limiting the amount of damage muscular cells experience during a workout.

As you may have noticed, Quinoa also comes in packages of red and black, these colors are from the rick antioxidants they are made up of. The red and black Quinoa pack a bigger Anti oxidant punch, they also tend to have a better flavor and and a firmer texture. Something to keep in mind, the Red and Black Quinoa’s have a longer cook time if they are not soaked for a few hours before hand.

Reason 2: Quinoa Is High In Protein

Quinoa is so extraordinary, it’s a “Complete protein” meaning it is made up of all nine essential amino acids, including Leucine (found in Whey Protein) which makes it very similar to animal proteins. 1 cup of cooked Quinoa is providing about 8 grams of protein.

Reason 3: Quinoa Comes Loaded With Fiber

Last, but certainly not least, quinoa is an excellent source of fiber. Men should aim to consume about 38 g of fiber a day, women 25 grams a day. Fiber is extremely important to the bodies regularity. The higher level of fiber helps to promote feelings of fullness, pushing off the desire to snack away mindlessly at your desk. Some people find it difficult to consume enough fiber in a day, so try replacing rice with quinoa, or just trade it out from time to time with a little more variety.
